Roof

We would love to see our Kenyan children under a metal roof rather than thatch. Thatch roofs are inexpensive, but they are loved by mosquitoes.

Wedding

Here is a photo from my phone showing the bridal party. It was a beautiful day.

New Family!

Steve and Stephanie Rivers join Mike and Janice McGinnis in welcoming the new couple, Mr. and Mrs. Adam McGinnis.

Nicole Wins

 I am so bummed! This was a fuzzy little video of Nicole catching Laura's bouquet. She was on the far edge of the group and when Laura threw it directly over her head to the middle, Nicole LEAPT into the air, diving to her left, for a smooth and perfect catch. It was a great moment and I look forward to the wedding of Robert Belote and Nicole Bates! (My baby!)

Oh Lord Jesus, Be Thou my vision.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Psalm 34

1 I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.
3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!
4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
9 Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!
10 The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
11 Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.
20 He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
21 Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

Trophosa

My heart has been aching for Trophosa.
In January 2010, I was in Kenya and asked my visitor, Todd White, a photographer, to capture the likeness of some of the children there so we could support some of them. Out of 102 photos, I randomly picked 20 after a little prayer and asked Pastor Joseph to find these children. The Cornerstone area of influence is vast and remote, so it entailed plenty of searching and travel. On my return, Pastor Stanley and others took me around to interview the children that I had chosen.
I remember how difficult it was to get to Trophosa's house. The road turned into maybe just clearings and we drove off over large rocks. It seemed perilous by car! But I was patient. We were in the Bush.
As we arrived, neighbors came to see the sight of the muzungu (me.) They stood around smiling and grouped maybe ten feet away, whispering amongst themselves. Someone retrieved Silas and Trophosa.
Trophosa was a young girl of about 13. She was quiet and shy and gentle. Many girls in Kenya are shy and quiet and gentle, but for Trophosa, they were true personality characteristics. She looked up at me with wide, lonely barren eyes. Really, she did not want to be hopeful. When I asked her who she lived with and what she liked to do in school, she answered dutifully. When I asked her what she would like to have, she looked at me so sincerely and very humbly, not quite ashamed, but very honest, with a gulp. "Can I have some food?" Yes. Yes, we will get you food.
and now this sweet baby of mine has gotten pregnant.
and I stood before the Lord in my heart to say, "What to do?" and felt only compassion and a longing to comfort her.
Love covers a multitude of sins.
Mercy triumphs over judgment.

11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’

6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.

Now in all these things I cannot say that we have a "policy" of supporting all of our unwed mothers. Rather, every case must be reviewed. I do not think our girls will go get pregnant on the basis of this case. Either they will preserve themselves morally, or they will not. This is between them and the Lord. They lose much by a birth without the father in a land of poverty where women have little identity. The child usually goes to the father's family or to some auntie so the girl can marry someone in the future. This is the land of survival.

Some will question my position on this young woman and others will question when I exclude this one or that one. It is favoritism by the Holy Spirit. If God gives me a motivation to pursue a young mother, then I will. If I sense no calling there, then I won't. There are FAR TOO MANY NEEDY PEOPLE in Kenya for me to bring in each one we meet. It requires choosing which means to some I say, "I am sorry." And I am VERY sorry, for I would love to help everyone in their time on this earth but as far as I am able, I will do for those within my care and will enlarge my capacity to help more.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.

4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
that have been devastated for generations.
5 Strangers will shepherd your flocks;
foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
6 And you will be called priests of the Lord,
you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth of nations,
and in their riches you will boast.

7 Instead of your shame
you will receive a double portion,
and instead of disgrace
you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit a double portion in your land,
and everlasting joy will be yours.

What happens when young girls are pressured to accept gifts in exchange for.......?

On Friday, I didn’t have an exam and so I used that opportunity to purchase some of the basic needs for our sponsored children together with David and Erick. The purchases included under pants, camisals for our growing girls ,bikers, pair of socks for the boys, panties, vests exercise books, erasers, rulers, pen and pencils among others. All this was done just to motivate them in terms of education and also ensure a comfortable stay at their schools.

We sorted the things on Saturday with Erick and ensured each child got his or her required items.

We also had a guiding and counselling session for our teenager girls. We first showed them a movie known as ’Under Pressure’. It is a movie that talks of how young girls involve themselves in early sex with boys and married men in exchange of money and luxuries such as phones and this is due to peer pressure not knowing the consequences that might befall them after wards.

We had them watch the whole movie the first time and started explaining bit by bit to make them understand what was going on. In the movie there was this young girl who was from a humble background while at school she had friends who had phones and so all the time they could tease her and provoke her. Due to that pressure this girl decided to seek advice from a friend who agreed that the other girls were right, not knowing the guy was interested in her, he even proposed to buy her a phone and a few days later he bought her one but the girl refused since she was not ready for that. On refusal to receive the phone the guy went back to his house disappointed to an extent that he did not speak to his wife.

We asked them what they learnt from the movie and we had several motivating answers from them

  1. Gladys said that school girls should not have premarital sex with adults.

  2. Fridah learnt that they should only concentrate in education while at school.

  3. According to Elizabeth young girls are not required to have phones in school

  4. Lydia said that students are not allowed to accept gifts from men and people with bad intentions and also strangers.

This showed that the girls were really following the movie. As a guiding and counseling team we advised them to do one thing at a time as everything has its own time. Like now it is time for them to only concentrate on education as is the main reason for them to be called students. We encouraged them to keep on working hard for it’s the only key to success in every person’s life. We also made it clear that they be more cautious while choosing friends so as not to end up messing their lives because of peer pressure.

Their closest friends should be books all the time and with that they wouldn’t have any other evil intentions.

We also had time with the guardian as a team. Advised them to be close to their children, monitor their progress all the time, encourage them and motivate them to work hard in their studies.

Last Monday's Visitation:

Today we visited Gladys, Frida, Daisy, and Vallery at their respective schools to check on their academic progress and individual basic needs.

Gladys and Frida are doing great at school. They had just completed an exam that was done on a district level by all the schools in the district. Their school was among the best schools and was ranked position 3 in the entire district. Our girl’s performance was very impressive.

Comparing Frida’s previous school performance the girl has improved tremendously. She scored 332 marks out of 500 marks which excellent performance according to the schools standards. Her important basic needs are as follows; Blanket, school shoes school bag, umbrella, mosquito net, casual wears, school sweater, among others.

Gladys scored 318 marks out of 500. And this was a great improvement from her previous performance. And she is still striving hard to excel in the remaining exams that will enable her be promoted to grade 8 next year.

Their teachers have had several compliments about them because they dedicate most of their time on books thus performing well. They also take lunch from school so as to save time on revision. They are disciplined girls and have great potential.

Their health is good and hygienically they were neat in their school uniforms. Their hair was Kemp.

At Daisy and Valery’s school, the girls were doing great. Their teachers were having a meeting but we managed to talk to their deputy head teacher who gave us the progress of the girls. According to him the girls had done exams but their results were yet to be released. So far their health status is good and the girls are always clean. They rarely miss school and are highly disciplined.

Valery needs the following; Lantern for her studies, past revision papers, Mattress, Plates, cutlers, cooking pan and water jerrycans.

Daisy prefers having a pair of socks, the one she has are worn out, geometrical set, Math and English Aid text books and sandals.

The visit was indeed a success!

Regards

Christabel.

Combat Costs in the War against Chiggers and Worms

Below is the break down for the medicine;

Albendazole = $7

Castor oil = $6

Hydrogen peroxide = $4

Total cost = $17

Roofs and floors. Cheaper than in America!

Below is the approximate breakdown cost for cementing a floor for one house: These are average estimates. Individual costs may vary regarding the size of the house and the distance covered during transportation of construction material. To some, it may even cost around a half of this total cost and to some it may even be slightly more than this.

12 packets of cement @$11 = $132

Transport=$25

I lorry of sand @$38 = $38

Transport=$25

1 lorry of gravel @$63 = $63

Transport=$25

Labor = $40

TOTAL COSTS= $348

Transport

Transportation varies for example: transporting cement from Kakamega Town to Grace and Everline’s home is around $13 and transporting the same to Abednego’s home is around $25.

Exact figures can only be obtained by surveying specific houses and getting individual costs.
Only Evangeline’s house has thatched roof and it will be better if they can have iron roof.

Zainabu Otari’s house is in very poor condition, almost falling; it can easily be blown away by strong wind.
Some of the children have leaking roofs such as Gladys, Lydia not sure of other houses with the same problem. They may just need repair.

a good week in review...

Christabel reported:

We had a staff meeting today and had individuals discussing their progress in their departments and their objectives for the remaining days of the week.

The agriculture department is a doing great job in the farm. They are watering eucalyptus, black night shade, have sowed the spider plant seeds, pruning leaves of kale and sowing amaranth seeds.

The photographers have taken pictures of the ongoing construction work, the sponsored children’s head shots, and are still editing staff videos.

So far the Training team has finalized PowerPoint with the afternoon class and are yet to begin internet and Email. On the same note, the mid-morning class is currently on word.

The programming class is preparing for another test on Friday on HTML and CSS but right now Duncan is taking the class through extensive CSS

Also, Paul and Duncan are working on the graphics and the progress is encouraging.

The visitation team is visiting children in their schools and at homes checking on their progress and their individual needs.

We motivated them to keep on with their great job so as to help achieve the organization’s goals.

The application is still under Design phase and we have finished developing the use case diagrams. Currently we are developing the user interface.

Imposters will always be among the brethren

This is so serious, I had to post it.

Walking with Jesus and Following Satan
Judas, through his life of treachery, supplies sinners with a solemn warning. We learn from the example of Judas that a person can be very near to Jesus Christ, and yet be lost and damned forever. Nobody was ever closer to Christ than the Twelve. Judas was one of them, and he's in hell today, because while he may have given intellectual assent to the truth, he never embraced Christ with heartfelt faith.
Judas wasn't deceived; he was a phony. He understood the truth, and he posed as a believer. Furthermore, he was good at it--the cleverest hypocrite we read about in all the Scriptures, for no one ever suspected him. He had everyone fooled except Jesus, who knew his heart.
And mark it, wherever God's work is done, there are impostors like Judas. There will always be hypocrites among the brethren. The favorite trick of Satan and those he employs is to "disguise themselves as servants of righteousness" (2 Corinthians 11:15). The devil is a master at making his work look good--and he is busily at work among the Lord's people.

It comes from this article:
http://www.gty.org/resources/positions/p26/unmasking-the-betrayer

 Not everyone who calls upon the name of Christ is in Christ!

There is Matthew 25:

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

Matthew 13

The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares

24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

It is very serious, but do not be discouraged--rather, Trust God with all your heart!

School Supplies for Sponsored Children

What is one of the great things about school? School supplies! And our generous sponsors have given our children some wonderful tools for learning. Thank you to our staff for organizing and purchasing these items that will improve performance and give the children dignity as they arrive at school PREPARED!

And we have Christmas coming! We need $2250 to give every child a Christmas of $50. Consider what you can do to bring smiles to God's children on the other side of the world. You have not forgotten them! They will give praises to the Lord for the joy you brought them.

1Peter 1

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
5 who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith-more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire-may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

If?

If you could do anything you wanted that glad honor to GOD, what would it be?

Send me an email:
sarivers.tgd@gmail.com

Alice and Jayden--Please stop to say a prayer.

Please PRAY for Jayden! We need to get him released from the orphanage, but he is a ward of the state and evidence in the ongoing trial against the Alice's biological father for raping her.

As for Alice, thank you to Debbie Evans who has sent the yearly sponsorship in full so we can get Alice in boarding school. Anita Nenonen is covering her other sponsorship (we have to have two for a good boarding high school costs more than 1200 a year.) Please pray for another sponsor in Anita's place. Anita also works to find sponsors for Moses and Rephe. They are both in a lower cost high school and always in need.

We thank Joseph Omuto for bringing this case to light so we could intercept the enemies plans against this young girl. We want to overcome the stigma this boy was assigned and Derrick and Carolyne Omani are going to raise him as their own. The Lord will get the glory in this and we are so happy to be the hands and feet of God to these beloved creations of God. We know God works all things for good for those who love Him and are called according to His Purposes. We claim Jayden for the Kingdom of God and speak life and love and faith over him, in Jesus name. We speak healing to Alice and pray God soften her heart in His miraculous way and that she sees God's redemption in her pain. May her story be one of Victory in Jesus! Where the enemy brings victimization, God brings VICTORY. So we will stand beside her and proclaim God's love for her.

This is good work in the field God has given us. We have this opportunity to bless and shine. May others see our good work and glorify God! We pray in His name for these now.

Judith, Dorcas, and Carolyn teaching health and nutrition in addition to computer knowledge.

Erick and I have been teaching the mid morning class on introduction to computers from the introduction bit to the end of the package. Here is the flow of topics that we covered Definition of computers, uses ,computer system, history and evolution of computers, parts of computer, input &output devices, computer classification, storage devices, network, keyboard layout, computer software, computer safety & health issues and finally factors to consider when choosing an operating system that we wound up yesterday on Thursday .

On the same Thursday afternoon we came up with an exam that they have done. We distributed and supervised the exam on Friday.

Health and Nutrition

Since we had books that we’ve been revising under health, we were privileged to share out what each one of us has learned. I majored on sickness i.e. malaria since it is the most sickness that affect young children I shared with them the causes of malaria ,ways of  transmission and the preventive measures that should be taken.  Dorcus majored on ear infections, finally Carolyn studied on nutrition. We will have time to share with the guardian plus the sponsored children over the same topics on distribution day.

Brief Report on Accounting by Victalis

Praise God! I am glad to write to inform you that even though I have been down to illness for almost the whole of last week, I thank God who has made me alive and kicking. This has been a week of serious commitment as I have been greatly, by Mr. Anjeje, involved in accounting in which he has taught and exposed me to various documents that I am now able to work on. For instance I can now comfortably make records of payment vouchers and receipts and enter the information to the main ledgers. Filling is another simple game to me. I am still eager to learn more and hence to perfect on my duties.

Brian's report includes Agricultural Project work

Praise our living almighty God. I thank God for the life, care and blessings he has given unto us.

                                                On Monday

We harvested spider plant seeds which had matured and we are now drying them up so that it reduces the cost of buying other seeds. We had a meeting where we discussed our weekly duties.  I also led the staff in practicing the worship songs which I composed and I pray God to help me go on and produce them.

On Tuesday

We completed the weeding of sukuma wiki and started to weed the tomatoes. We had a brief meeting of our gardening project led by our leader Derrick on how to improve agriculture.

                                                Wednesday

We mulched the tomatoes where we carried the mulch to the farm from Henry’s home. We did this to prevent them from soil born diseases and also for moisture conservation.

                                                  On Thursday

We build shed for the black night nursery to prevent damage of the seedlings during heavy rains and hot sun rays.

                                                On Friday

We had transportation of farm yard manure to the garden from Henry’s home to which we will apply to the tomatoes to improve soil nutrients. I also did the blowing of the computer and ensured they are clean. We sowed the amaranthus and watering of black night shade nursery.

Don's report on computer classes:

This week starting with on Monday, i involved myself in counter checking names of students who are to receive certificates.I had to do a follow up n making corrections to individuals names which were entered mistakenly. In the afternoon hours I always participate in training session of the afternoon class as a lesson assistant to Oscar. We noticed our students were having a hard time understanding functions and calculations which they were covering on their MS Excel course.

On Tuesday, Brian and I did the routine tasks of dusting our machines and cleaning some dusty keyboards and mouse. I also kept myself that day busy by checking class attendance register and I was pretty impressed with their class attendance since minimal cases of absentism has been reported. I was also counter checking students records which are in our training computer just making sure it's up to date with current information.

Wednesday,we sorted machines which needed updates and making a follow up of installing them.

Thursday, I helped Judith and Erick in coming up with exam questions, am glad we accomplished that on time.

Friday, I also participated in supervision of the exam.I winded up my week by making priorities of what to accomplished by next week work plan.

Update on Eunice in College

I went to college at Kakamega for the 2nd session which began on 5th August and we closed yesterday 31stAugust.I am now preparing to open school on 3rd September and continue with my teaching work.

At the college,I have been privileged to have an easy time in my studies in regard to payment of school fees.This time, I had no stress of fees because you had paid for me in advance and when they were sending other students away to bring fees,I was comfortable in class.This made me to do well in my tests which placed me in a good position.The only expense I had was photocopies, transport  and pocket money which I do use for my personal effects.I was able to meet this without any difficult.

The subjects I am now undertaking are:

1.       General methods in teaching,

2.       Child Growth and development chapter 2,

3.       Language,

4.       Administration and management,

5.       Research,

Under Research,we have research tutorial which shall be conducted twice in a month beginning this month and then we develop a research project on challenges facing young children.

The lessons have been very tedious and were conducted throughout the week including Sundays.On Sundays we began at 12 noon after having service in the morning hours.It has been a busy month but I have gained in knowledge, experience and time management.

I thank God for taking me through the second session and giving me good health in an environment of many other students with different background.
